Chata Maiwong was born in Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand, in 1967. He received his education at the Ban Huai Wittaya Mengraimaharatwittayakom School in Chiang Rai.
Chata is exceptional in that he has not received a formal arts education, but has taught himself over many years through books and with the help of other artists in Chiangrai. His focus is on wood paintings, a technique which had been traditionally practiced in Northern Thailand, the former Lanna kingdom. It is particularly the natural textures of wood which he finds interesting and which typically become part of the inspiration for his artwork. The underlying theme of his works is usually related to Buddhism, his style abstract. His choice of media includes oil color and gold leaf paper. If he does not paint on wood, Chata at times does paintings on canvas, to which he adds wooden structures that thus become part of the overall artwork. Apart from decorative artwork, he also likes to make functional furniture with a touch of art.
Selected pieces of Chata’s works were in the past exhibited at 9 Art Gallery in Chiang Rai. A larger collection of his works are displayed in his home and art studio, and online at http://chata.goldentriangleart.com.
