Portrait of Thai artist Jittiwut Sriyang

Jittiwut Sriyang

Jittiwut Sriyang is an ambitious young artist from Korat, Thailand. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Art in Chiang Mai in 2003.

Even though he has lived in Chiang Mai for many years, he maintains an ambition to observe the Chiang Mai lifestyle as an outsider and to paint his view of the happier side of life – the joy, the fun, the ladyboys, the festivals, the ’sanuk’ – all in a colourful and semi-abstract way. Some of his paintings might look happy but they have a degree of social commentary and criticism in them, and Mr. Jittiwut does not shy away from issues such as rape, suicide and corruption.

His style is unique, but some of his paintings could lead to the conclusion that Dali must be his favourite master. Jittiwut’s technique is acrylic and crayon on canvas.

A selection of Mr. Jittiwut’s works is exhibited at the La Luna Gallery.

Portrait of Myanmar artist Lu Minn

Lu Minn

Lu Minn was born in 1947 in Myanmar and graduated from the Yangon School of Fine Arts in the late 1960s. He is highly recognized in the Myanmar art scene and his works have been exhibited both in Myanmar and internationally.

His latest work is a collection of paintings entitled ‘Behind the Curtain’. He drew the inspiration for these paintings from visit to a night club where he could only see the clothes of the people under the neon light, but not their faces. He then applied his observance to a traditional Myanmar dance called ‘The dance of the lady performers’, which is a spiritual dance typical for the region. He does not portray the lady dancers during their performance, though, but during their recess behind the curtains where they are waiting for their moment in the limelight.

A selection of Lu Minn's paintings are displayed at this month's 'Myanmar Contemporary Art Exhibition' at CMU Art Center. Please refer to 'Arts&Exhibitions' below for more information.
