Portrait of Thai artist Rungsak Dokbua, Chiang Mai

Rungsak Dokbua

Mr. Rungsak has been among the shining stars of Chiang Mai’s artist scene for many years. Being born in Kamphengphet, Thailand, in 1967, he holds degrees in Fine Arts both from Chiang Mai University and Silapakorn University. His art has over the years been widely exhibited in both Thailand and the United States, where conosceurs particularly like his abstract paintings, people’s portraits, and Computer Graphic art. Many of his works use abstract elements to underline the importance of the main symbols of Thai society, such as the King and Buddha, resulting in very powerful images. In other works, his son is the central theme.

According to Mr. Rungsak, Art is the revelation of inner values and abstract thought. “The power of the imagination will help us travel beyond ordinary thought toward the insight that everything is related.”

Mr. Rungsak recently completed a series of portraits of the King, a selection of which is currently exhibited at the Gongdee Gallery:

Portrait of Thai artist Sutthisak Phuthararak, Chiang Mai

Sutthisak Phuthararak

Mr. Sutthisak is a highly-recognized teacher of Sculpturing at the Fine Arts Department at Chiang Mai University.
He has drawn the inspiration for his own works from the figures commonly found in Thailand’s Buddhist temples. Based upon that he has come up with his own style of sculptures, showing life-size human figures - mainly women – that in their appearance combine modern with traditional Thai elements. The sculptures often display common motions, thus stressing the importance of seemingly unimportant gestures in people’s daily lives. Mr. Sutthisak uses mainly plaster for his works and often applies bright colors to seemingly make his figures come alive. .

Selected pieces of Mr. Sutthisak’s works are currently exhibited at the Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture at the Chiang Mai University.
